What's Up with the Pope and Climate Change?

Francis Rooney served as United States Ambassador to the Holy See under George W. Bush from 2005–2008. He is Chief Executive Officer of Rooney Holdings, Inc.

In his new book, THE GLOBAL VATICAN, Ambassador Rooney provides an unprecedented inside look at the Catholic Church, its role in world politics and diplomacy, and the extraordinary relationship between the United States and the Holy See.

Ambassador Rooney serves as a member of the Advisory Board of the Panama Canal Authority, a member of the Council of American Ambassadors, and a Trustee of the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress. He is a graduate of Georgetown University and Georgetown University Law Center. He also has Honorary Degrees from the University of Notre Dame and the University of Dallas.

Ambassador Francis Rooney contends that Pope Francis should focus on saving souls—not the planet. Amen to that!!!

· Pope Francis and the Church should play a crucial role in promoting the salvation of individuals, defending religious liberty, and promoting morality on vital issues of the day—not getting involved in divisive and contested political issues like climate/environmental policy.

· The science of “climate change” is not settled. While we must take all threats to our environment seriously, the linkage between CO2 emissions and climate change is not established. And there is certainly no consensus regarding effective and sensible policy solutions.

· Pope Francis should not cast the climate change debate as rich countries vs. poor countries. The greatest environmental harm, worst emissions, and worst clearcutting of forests for timber and fuel are occurring in poorer and less developed countries that lack even the most basic environmental standards.
